Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State on Tuesday dismissed reports that he has ‘split’ with his close ally, Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that in a surprising contrast to the position of his friend, Wike, Ortom had allegedly said he is not supporting the removal of his Benue ‘brother’, Senator Iyorchia Ayu as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Since the emergence of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar as the candidate of the party in May, the Wike group has insisted that Ayu must resign as a condition for supporting the PDP presidential candidate.

Addressing newsmen in Makurdi, the state capital, shortly after a meeting with the Jemgbagh people of Zone B senatorial district, the Benue governor denied abandoning Wike, saying in fact, he just returned back from London, United Kingdom (UK) with him.

“But, the headline that I have split with Nyesom (is incorrect); I just came back from London with Wike this morning (Tuesday),” Ortom said.

“We are friends and I still maintain my stand on what I said (his statement opposing Ayu’s removal). I have not moved away from there. I still sympathise with Wike on the injustice meted on him.

“Politics is about interest and where your interest is not protected, you have a right to protest and I think that is what is happening. The party leadership has not been fair to Governor Wike based on activities that took place during and after the convention.”
