The Imo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested two notorious car snatchers in the state.
Speaking during the parade of the suspects in Owerri on Wednesday, the State Commandant, Mary Mbanugo, disclosed that the suspects, Anayo Obekwe (51) from Ahiazu Mbaise and Kenneth Alamonye (53) from Ehime Mbano Local Government Areas, were apprehended for allegedly stealing a navy blue Toyota Corolla at gunpoint.
Mbanugo revealed that the stolen vehicle, taken in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, was tracked and recovered in Umuodu Mbieri, located in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.
While parading the suspects, she stated that Obekwe, who identified himself as a mechanic, claimed ignorance of the car’s stolen status, alleging that he was only repairing the vehicle for Alamonye. However, the commandant noted that Alamonye, identified as the prime suspect, confessed to committing the crime.
“The arrest and recovery of the stolen vehicle were the result of the command’s surveillance efforts and the strategic operations of our special intelligence team,” Mbanugo explained.
She emphasized that the command is resolute in tackling criminal activities, especially during the festive period. “We have intensified efforts to dismantle criminal syndicates specializing in armed car theft and other crimes across the state. Our commitment is to ensure the safety of lives and property for all residents, particularly during the yuletide,” she assured.
Mbanugo also urged Imo residents and visitors to feel confident about returning home for the festivities, stating that comprehensive security measures are in place to guarantee their safety.
